Known Limitations
Director 11: Recording or converting to file fails on Windows if the pathname contains high ascii characters. This appears to be a limitation of specific Xtra programming interfaces used by Audio Xtra that might be fixed by Adobe in future releases. For now, recording to RAM or members or using the new useTempDirectory environment setting is a good idea to get a safer soundsDirectory path. If you are recording to files in Shockwave for uploading also check the new axConvertToSFData() function, which works directly with RAM or member recordings.
Director 11 and Vista: Each audio input might be listed as a different input device in the selection lists, compared with what was returned in Windows XP or earlier. The actual functionality if preserved, and using the default audio device and input devices for recording still works as expected.
Director 11: Playback of MPEG3 and SWA files imported to the sound list is not supported on any platform. This is a limitation of the MPEG3 Sound Xtras included in Director 11 with the conversion interfaces used by the Xtra, and might be fixed in the future by Adobe.
Voice recognition software such as Apple's built-in Speech Recognition or IBM's ViaVoice cannot be used at the same time as Audio Xtra because they both need control of the input device.
On Windows, if the sound card is not full-duplex, recording sound prevents other sound from playing. You cannot record and play sound at the same time on those systems. If your audience includes PC's that may have older sound cards you should be sure that the recorder is closed before attempting to play sound, with Audio Xtra commands or Director.
When converting to AU files you must use settings of convertSampleRate = 8000, convertSampleDepth = 0, convertNumChannels = 0. The sound you are converting from must have an 8-bit sample depth. Any other settings will produce corrupted files. This problem lies in the current Sun AU Import Export Xtra.
On Mac Classic, setting or getting the playthrough property while the recorder is closed may cause a system crash.
There is no support for UNC style file paths on Win. Any network drive referenced must be mounted and assigned a drive letter.
Filenames longer than 126 characters cannot be used with axLoadSound() in Windows. (fixed in version 6)
