A properly configured MPEG MCI driver and ActiveX network support libraries are required in both authoring and playback machines. If you need additional information about MPEG playback technologies or help selecting the technology better suited for your project please consult the technotes GN001 and GN002 available at the support library. MpegXtra is NOT a recommended solution for MPEG playback in Windows 2000.

*MpegXtra is compliant with Microsoft's MPEG Command Set for the Media Control Interface (Microsoft Part No. 098-37538). It has been tested successfully with several hardware and software-based MPEG decoders, including Sigma Designs RealMagic, CreativeLabs PC-DVD DXR2 and others.
To discover if there's a MPEG MCI driver in your system you should open the original Media Player application and try to play a MPEG file from there.
The ActiveX network libraries are present in all Windows 95 systems shipped after November/96. These libraries are installed by all versions of Internet Explorer and also by several other products, including Microsoft Office, so the absolute majority of users already have them in place. We recommend inclusion of the ActiveX network libraries installer with your product for users that do not have them.
For users that do not have the required software you can freely redistribute the DirectShow and ActiveX installers with your products. DirectShow is Microsoft's software-based MPEG decoder, and can be used with MpegXtra if your system is correctly configured. If you are considering using software-based MPEG decoding than we recommend our DirectMediaXtra, built specifically to support the DirectShow interfaces. Registered users of MpegXtra can download our support software installer from the download section.
